All Northeastern University staff members are Mandatory Reporters. This includes Student Ambassadors, Graduate Teaching Assistants, and the SU President.
As Mandatory Reporters, staff members are obligated to report any student disclosures of sexual misconduct, whether is recent or historic and regardless of where it happened.
I've received a disclosure of sexual misconduct from a student - what do I do now?
First and foremost, make sure the student is not in immediate danger. Contact your line manager or the Designated Safeguarding Lead on safeguarding@nulondon.ac.uk if you are unsure of this.
Next, you will need to use Report + Support to submit a report. You must not do this anonymously and must name yourself as the person who took the student disclosure so that the Report Triage Team can follow up with you - not just to clarify any information on the disclosure, but also to ensure you have the appropriate wellbeing support, as this may have been a difficult experience for you too.
You should include as much detail as you can in the report so that the Report Triage Team and SVLOs can offer the most appropriate support to the impacted student. The student can choose not to engage with any support if they prefer; it is entirely their choice. It is completely okay if you are not clear on any specifics, you only need to report what you know, and are not expected to investigate anything further.
I'm not sure that what I just heard was a disclosure of sexual misconduct, but I have a lingering feeling that something isn't right. What should I do?
Contact the Head of Student Support who can have a confidential discussion with you to explore the experience you had and make recommendations of what the next steps should be. You can also approach the SVLO Team on svlo@nulondon.ac.uk or submit a ticket to HR if you are worried about a colleague.
I've not done my Mandatory Reporting training or would like a refresher. Who do I contact?
Please inform your line manager who can reach out to HR to ensure you are included in the next wave of Mandatory Reporting training. If you would like more informal training whilst you are waiting, please contact the Head of Student Support who can help you with this.
